The organisers of the Marian Michalik Competition, which is addressed to the young generation of artists, ask the same question every time: what is young Polish art like?
In the refreshed competition format, the Programme Board composed of: Andrzej Saj, Ph.D. Krzysztof Stanisławski and Piotr Głowacki re-established the objectives of the competition as the search for and promotion of new creative individualities in the youngest generation of painters. The means to do this are the presentation of paintings (or works made with painting means) which depict an object in contemporary cultural reality, i.e. contemporary references to the subject of still life. The works sent to the Marian Michalik Competition reflect the differences in the approach to what a painting is. Among the participants there are painters who focus on painting values, and the form of a painting is a goal in itself. The other group consists of works in which content is dominant, and the form is only a carrier of that content. This is significant in the case of a competition which has a specific theme, although it is difficult not to notice that the subject, even of a broadly defined still life, caused some difficulty to the artists. However, it is worth emphasising that the competition entries present an entire range of painting styles and formal creations. It is a testimony to the unfailing fascination with art, the tendency towards creative experiments and self-defining oneself as an artist.
