This year, after four years of absolute freedom, the participants of Satyrykon had another opportunity to tackle a specified theme. Such a format, liked by both artists and the audience, is used today by most competitions all over the world. That is why it was perversely given up in Legnica, after 8 years (2002-2010). With time it turned out that it was to the regret of the majority of the interested people. In the flood of satirical “tasks” given to artists, “Enthusiasm” stood out. It was non-commercial, i.e. not thought up on account of the possibility of finding sponsors, not obvious – it simply did not pay attention to any of the most basic problems of the modern world, such as war, devastation of the environment or the lack of water, and in addition – which is the most uncharacteristic – it was bizarrely positive (...). Tentatively, it can be said that despite a number of enthusiastic e-mails and “likes” which were the first response, the theme proved to be difficult. Most of the artists approached it in a quite contrary way. There aren't many bursts of pure joy, even humorous ones. Although they can be found, evoking a surprisingly good mood for a typical satirical exhibition. However, the percentage of black humour and the number of works referring to such motifs as funeral, death, war or prison, increased significantly… Are we still capable of true joy, passion, enthusiasm today? Is the so-called positive attitude just a type of intolerable coercion and a mask put on in different circumstances for the use of society? Can we induce these states in ourselves only with the help of various substances, in greater and greater amounts? And should we worry about that at all? After all, we know very well that uncritical enthusiasm can often be individually, historically and politically dangerous, and serves various '-isms”. Enthusiasm for death, current wars, terrorism… Enthusiasm after Charlie Hebdo… And: Are we Poles still the most prone to enthusiasm romantics in Europe? These and a number of important questions are answered with real passion by the artists presented in the exhibition. This is how it is – every why has a wherefore. Seemingly the least topical, detached from reality, one can say “philosophical” theme somewhat casually, as without compulsion, releases its perhaps most accurate, most interesting satirical diagnosis… And that is why, in addition to the possibility of a positive battery charge, it is worth visiting this exhibition.

About the festival - Copper Museum in Legnica

SATYRYKON is a festival with already established international prestige. This is evidenced by the grand prix plate awarded by the American magazine “Witty World”, as well as the maximum score of “5 stars” awarded by FECO (Federation of Cartoonists Organisations). Its initiators were Andrzej Tomiałojć from Legnica and Wrocław-resident Robert Szecówka in 1977. Initially, Satyrykon was of local nature – it was then an exhibition of drawings of the Wrocław community, but as early as in 1978, it metamorphosed into a national competition exhibition of satirical drawings. Legnica was the first and for many years the only meeting place for the creators of Polish satire, and Satyrykon itself effectively contributed to the popularisation of satirical drawing in Poland. Over the following years, Satyrykon enriched its programme and expanded the format. In 1980, the International Photography Exhibition Fotożart was organised for the first time, and the works submitted for the satirical drawing competition were judged in two categories: satire and humour. Both exhibitions were joined by the common prize of the Satyrykon Grand Prix. In 1985, the National Exhibition of Satirical Drawings officially became an international competition. At the time, close contacts with many artists, art critics and festival organisers from abroad were established. At present, the International Exhibition SATYRYKON is a competition open to illustrators, graphic designers, painters, sculptors, poster designers and photographers. Every year, thousands of works by several hundred authors from several dozen countries are submitted to Satyrykon. Apart from the competition exhibition, numerous accompanying events are held during Satyrykon (...).
