A few words about the biennale:

Sebastian Smit, Lech Mazurek Curators - 2nd International Student Poster Biennale ISPB Lublin 2015

The Lublin Biennial is primarily distinguished from other such undertakings by a group of artists to which we address our competition. We are interested in students of artistic and architectural fields, and their graduates who completed their studies no later than fifteen years ago. The response to the announcement of the competition exceeded our wildest expectations. We received 1434 entries from 37 countries (...). The works were submitted in three categories. The first one – an open category, including film, music, theatre and ideological posters, therefore belonging to the classics of the genre, fulfilling within its basic communication functions for decades. The second one – related to the 700th anniversary of conferring municipal rights on Lublin, and the third one, related to the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The jury was chaired by Krzysztof Dyda – a well-known collector and owner of the prestigious Poster Gallery in Kraków. We invited to the jury the poster creators and connoisseurs with a great artistic, critical and educational output, who occupy a significant position in the artistic environment: Joanna Górska & Jerzy Skakun (Homework Studio), Michał Jandura (a graphic artist, Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków), Ryszard Kaja (a graphic artist, painter, stage designer), Marek Sibinsky (a graphic artist, FU Ostrava), Anita Wasik (a graphic artist, Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk), Michał Warda (a design critic, historian, manager of many exhibitions, National Museum in Warsaw) and Agnieszka Ziemiszewska (a graphic artist). It turned out that the assessed works are characterised by multiple ideological references, interesting ideas, great inventiveness and high artistic values, especially clear messages diversified with formal means. Their themes are multidimensional, although standing out unquestionably are projects whose authors demonstrate social commitment, for example deal with the problems of intolerance and isolationism, and promote pacifism. 373 posters of 190 artists from 28 countries were qualified for the post-competition exhibition in Galeria Labirynt in Lublin. We tried to select the most interesting works in terms of style and theme to present a set which constitutes a reliable cross section of the poster created by a young generation of artists from all over the world (...). At the same time, we are sure that our biennial proves the vitality of the art of a poster, which exists and is developing despite the aggression of TV and radio spots and the expansion of internet advertising. We think that the Lublin Biennial has also become a field for creative dialogue and made it possible for artists from different cultural circles to confront their achievements (...).
