More info:

The Polish Poster Biennial, started in 1965 in Katowice, is the first prestigious event dedicated to the Polish poster. Over the years, it undoubtedly came to the forefront of art competitions and exhibitions in the country, and inspired the International Poster Biennial in Warsaw in 1966. In the competitions in Katowice prizes were won by the late artists of the highest stature – Henryk Tomaszewski, Julian Pałka, Jan Młodożeniec, Roman Cieślewicz, Maciej Urbaniec, Jan Lenica, Waldemar Świerzy. Each subsequent edition proves that the poster, although rapidly supplanted by other forms of visual communication, remains a living form of artistic expression. This is evidenced by the number of entries (173 artists submitted 454 posters to this year's competition. 277 posters were qualified to participate in the post-competition exhibition), participation of outstanding graphic designers, and above all by the new generation of artists' constant interest in the poster. An excerpt from the introduction to a catalogue - Mariusz Knorowski

“(…) So every edition of the Biennial is an opportunity to see the works of several generations of enthusiasts. Older people still think only positively about the unceasing need to create posters. Younger people try to do it progressively, observing current trends and tendencies in the world of graphic design. Today, the possibilities of such monitoring are practically unlimited and available to anyone, a professional and an amateur. The neophytes who share the faith of their teachers want to reevaluate it and summon up new energy from it. Today, the poster can be distributed using the web, even without a specific order, for the very fact of enlarging the collection, but always with the attitude that somebody will see it, and maybe even remember it. (...) Many contemporary forms of expression follow the poster method with synthesis, implement the idea of condensation of the content focused almost point-wise in a sign or a symbol, and above all aspire to the universal accessibility of the message, which is supposed to be ideologically and culturally extraterritorial, so in a sense to have a global and easily assimilable – elementary and obvious – dimension. And this state of affairs is attainable, in which the poster has its share, directly or indirectly. That is why we should not degrade or disregard it too rashly. If it is not too visible or driven out of public space, it remains in the deep recesses of the human psyche as a certain type of image (…)".
